Project Title: James Cates Memorial Project at University of North Carolina

 

Background

In 2022, a permanent memorial was installed on the University of North Carolina (UNC) campus to honor James Lewis Cates Jr., a Black man who was tragically killed in an act of racial violence in 1970. Cates was fatally stabbed outside the Student Union after attending a dance aimed at fostering better race relations. This memorial stands as a testament to the community's ongoing struggle against racial violence and its commitment to remembering those lost to such tragedies.

 

Objective

The main objectives of the James Cates Memorial Project included:

• To honor the life and legacy of James Cates Jr.

• To raise awareness of racial violence and its long-term impact on communities.

   • Engaged with project leaders, including Senator Valerie Foushee, University officials, and Civil Rights Activist Danita Mason-Hogans, to advocate for the installation of the memorial.

   • Gathered support from campus and local communities through awareness campaigns that highlighted Cates’ story and the significance of addressing racial violence.
